7 Signs Your Baby's Diaper Is the Wrong Size

Here is the thing nobody tells new parents: most leaks are not a brand problem, they are a fit problem. The same diaper that leaks on a baby wearing the wrong size performs perfectly one size over or under. Run through these 7 signs before you blame the diaper.

1Gaps at the thighs

Slide a finger along the leg cuff. If there is open air between elastic and skin, liquid has a highway out. Gaps mean the diaper is too big.

2The waistband sits over the belly button

A diaper riding that high is a size too big. It will feel secure, then leak out the legs, because the absorbent core is not sitting where it should.

3Red marks when you take it off

Elastic lines pressed into thighs or tummy mean it is too small. Marks also mean less airflow, and that is how rashes start.

4Tabs stretched to their limit

Tabs should land comfortably near the middle. If they barely reach, size up. If they overlap all the way, size down.

5Low coverage on the bum

If the back of the diaper barely covers what it needs to cover, a blowout is a matter of time, not luck. That is a too-small sign.

6Soaked through by morning

Overnight leaks in a diaper that looked fine at bedtime often mean the core is too small for the job, or the fit is letting liquid pool at one end.

7You are between weight ranges

Weight ranges overlap on purpose. A 20 lb baby fits size 2, 3, and almost 4 in most brands. The chart cannot decide for you, because every brand cuts differently. Here is Alppi's actual sample size guide:

The fix: test 2 sizes on your actual baby

Alppi runs roomy. If your baby sits between 2 sizes, most parents do better going with the smaller one. The only real answer is trying both, which is exactly what our sample offer is built for.

Though they seem really thin on first inspection, they really do contain a lot! They fit our 3 week old a bit better now at somewhere over 8lbs.
